Ever been in that place, when you came home from a trip and you felt completely miserable? This happened to me over and over again. I started to think that I did something wrong? Or worse; wasn’t it fun, when I thought it was fun? Since I started to pay more attention to what I liked to do while traveling, this feeling reduced a lot. Not only are my travels better because of these tips, they have also become cheaper. With still the same quality as before. I have written this article out completely. But since this list had more than 2000 words in it, I thought it better to split it into three parts. You can read what’s contained in Part I below!
Aisle + Window
If you’re traveling as a couple, this hack can be very useful: book an aisle seat and a window seat on the plane. If another person gets stuck in the middle, you have the opportunity to exchange seats. However, if there’s no center of the action, you have the whole row to yourself.
Two hours in advance at the airport, that’s the most important rule for traveling by plane. But if you are going abroad, or if you are at a foreign airport, it may sometimes be better to be three to four hours in advance at the airport. Usually there are nice things to do and if you have a card, you can even relax in a soothing lounge.
Making copies of your documents
I’ve already forgotten how many times I have said that you should make copies of your documents. But it is one of the best tips I and other travel bloggers can give you. Haven’t you read this tip in my previous articles; make copies of your passport, your hotel details, your flight details, driving license, etc. Put these copies also on your smartphone.
Do something exciting
To make your trip extra fun, you can go do something challenging. And yes, it’s me that’s saying this. I’m one of those who isn’t an absolute fan of scary new things. But guess what, the best things happen when you haven’t planned it.
Eyemask + Ear plugs
Because which airplane traveler doesn’t know this… A long flight (or even for a few hours) and you’re already so tired from flying. Even though the plane has just taken off. So sleep is one of the options. But by the noise of the engines and the constantly movements of the air crew, you can’t sleep well, behold an eye mask and ear plugs as heaven.
External charger for Smartphone
Nothing is worse than when you are in an emergency and your Smartphone can’t open up. Help! Therefore, buy an external charger. Very convenient, and it helps when there aren’t any power sockets.
Money is very important in this world. Try to put it away in a safe place, but see that you don’t forget where your put it, of course. Therefore, a money belt is great: you know it’s there, but no one (unless it is a very good pickpocket) outside you can get to the money.
Enjoy your time
Enjoy your time, a task that seems very simple, but most of the times it’s very difficult. Every time I went on a trip, I wanted to see as much as possible in a short time. That’s bad, my eldest sister taught me that. If I may say so, she’s more a fan of slow travel. And now I can only wholeheartedly agree. Take the time to sit on a terrace, or take the time to let the place all in. Before you know it, you’re already at home.
Before I go on a trip, I learn some handy phrases from the destination. Locals find it very sweet of you if you speak (or rather trying to speak) something in their own language. But because you never learn a language in one, two, three, a dictionary with phrases can come in handy.
Perhaps the hype of this year are the Packing Cubes. Small/medium-sized cubes to add your beauty, electronics, and reading articles in. Very convenient, and if makes your suitcase well organized.
Roll up i.o. folding
Another good packing hack: did you know that when you roll up your garments, you have more space in your suitcase? Strange but true. I have tested this method many times, and it never disappoints me.
Screenshot + Follow the route
It can sometimes do good to get away from all the WiFi (did I say this ?!) and to lose yourself in a neighborhood. Just a minute wandering can do wonders. But for me, this may not last forever. I like to know where I’m going, or what my final destination is. Yet I can’t always use my mobile data, so I take a screenshot of the route I should follow and then I turn off my data again.
Plan your outfits
Believe me when I say that I’m a total scatterbrain in clothes AND travel. In one way or another, I don’t get to manage my things and keep organized. Thus, I put my clothes in the suitcase the last night before leaving, and I didn’t even need some of those clothes while traveling. It’s better to plan your outfits. Make a schedule and stick to it. So you know immediately how many clothes you need.
All those beautiful memories should indeed stay, right? And what could be better than keeping your own Travel Journal. In a Travel Journal you can literally stick everything: a train ticket, a boarding pass, a street map, a receipt of a restaurant, etc.
Before I go abroad, I look up on the internet what the “most common scams” in that area are. In other words; what scams are most common in that one city. Not only does it make me calmer, but it also gives me a bad-ass feeling (as I am prepared).
What do you do for having a better trip?
